SAN DIEGO : Guard Slain at Car Dealership

Share

A 21-year-old security guard was killed at Courtesy Chevrolet in Mission Valley early Tuesday during a robbery, police said.

The guard, identified as Daniel Rubalcaba of Security Bureau Inc., regularly patrolled the auto dealership, 750 Camino del Rio North, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

He was struck on the head with a blunt object in the auto lot about 30 yards from the office, San Diego Police Lt. John Welter said.

The attacker or attackers then entered the office and burglarized the safe, taking an undetermined amount of cash, Welter said. Welter said that, although police believe the office was locked, there were no signs of forced entry.

Welter said he believes the guard was unarmed. He had worked for the private security company for several years, Welter said.

The office manager discovered the burglarized safe about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday and called police. Before they arrived, another employee found the security guard’s body in an auto paint booth.

“We had what we thought was a burglary turn into murder,” Welter said.

The slaying does not appear to be related to that of a 20-year-old security guard Sunday in South San Diego, Welter said.
