Long Beach : Kellogg Remains Vice Mayor; Lowenthal Residence Decided
The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday retained Councilman Jeffrey A. Kellogg in the ceremonial seat of vice mayor for another two-year term and approved a redistricting measure that put Councilman Allan Lowenthal’s home back in the 2nd District.
Kellogg’s reappointment was approved after he, Lowenthal, Doris Topsy-Elvord and Thomas Clark were sworn in to serve four-year terms on the council.
The council’s decision to redraw the boundaries to return Lowenthal’s home and four other parcels of land back to the 2nd District reversed what they called a “political wrong” that occurred before last year’s election.
Lowenthal’s house in the Bluff Park neighborhood became part of the 3rd District last year after Lowenthal declared his candidacy against then-incumbent Wallace Edgerton.
Because candidates must live in the districts they want to represent, Lowenthal was forced to rent an apartment in the 2nd District during the campaign. He can now return to his house on First Street where he has lived for more than 20 years.
