New Trustee Wants to Change Schools’ Focus

The school board’s newest member says he wants to sway the majority to a conservative point of view during his four-year term, moving it from what he calls its current liberal bent.

Edward M. Eveland took the seat of retiring Trustee Harriet Williams at Monday’s regular meeting, where board members elected Mary Stanton as president and Karin Polacheck as vice president. The board also announced that, beginning on Aug. 10, regular meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.

Eveland, who ran unopposed in April, wants schools to teach “the difference between right and wrong,” he said. He also wants teachers and administrators to make education “the No. 1 priority, not gangs, drugs, date rape, condoms and sex.” Instituting an extensive vocational education program is another of his priorities, he said. “Eighty percent of the students should not go on to college and universities.”
