MOORPARK : Trial Date of County Lawsuit Postponed
The trial date for Ventura County’s lawsuit against Moorpark over the city’s redevelopment plan has been postponed to give county and city officials time to settle the dispute out of court, officials said.
The case is scheduled to be heard in Ventura County Superior Court on Nov. 2, three months later than the original date of Aug. 3, Moorpark City Manager Steven Kueny said.
In addition to the county, the Moorpark Unified School District and the county’s community college district have sued the city over its proposed redevelopment plan for the downtown area.
Their lawsuits are scheduled to be heard jointly with the county’s.
Kueny said the delay gives city officials time to negotiate with each of the three agencies before the matter goes to court.
The county and the school and college districts filed lawsuits against the city in 1989 when the city announced its plan to spend up to $300 million in future property taxes over the next 45 years for rehabilitating its older, downtown neighborhood.
County and school officials have argued that the redevelopment plan would unfairly deprive them of their share of future increases in property tax revenues in the city.
City officials have said they are close to an agreement with the school district over the issue.
