Courier Upset in Second Round by Perez
Top-ranked Jim Courier was upset by unseeded Diego Perez of Uruguay, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, Wednesday in a rain-interrupted second-round match at the Philips Head Cup clay-court tennis tournament in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Perez, 30, who has not won an ATP tournament since 1985, was overpowered in the first set by Courier, survived a tiebreaker to pull even.
Play was suspended for nearly two hours by rain with the score 4-4 in the second set before Perez put away the world’s No. 1 player, who is headed for the Olympics in Barcelona.
