Summer Pro League Moves to Redondo High Tonight

The Southern California Summer Pro Basketball League will move to Redondo High this weekend, starting with two games tonight.

The Lakers, featuring second-round draft choice Duane Cooper of USC, will play the NBA Pros at 6, followed by the NBA Stars meeting the NBA Breakers at 8:15.

The NBA Pros feature former Cal State Fullerton standout Cedric Ceballos of the Phoenix Suns and former Crenshaw High standout John Williams of the Washington Bullets. Corey Gaines, formerly of St. Bernard High, UCLA and Loyola Marymount, plays for the NBA Stars.

A five-game schedule will be played Saturday and Sunday at Redondo, starting at 11:15 a.m. and continuing through 8:15 p.m. Competition returns to Inglewood High on Monday.

Tickets, which are available at the door, are $5 and are good for all games that day. Tickets are $2.50 for children up to age 11 and for senior citizens over 60.

World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Victor Manuel Rabanales of Mexico City makes his second title defense when he fights Changkyun Oh of Seoul, South Korea, Monday at the Forum.

Rabanales, 29, won the 118-pound title with a technical decision over Korean Yonghoon Lee March 30 at the Forum. Rabanales is 31-10-2 with 18 knockouts, including a 17-1-1 record in his last 19 bouts.

Oh, 30, is 30-4-4 with 13 knockouts and is 14-0-2 in his last 16 bouts.

The card starts at 7 p.m. with preliminary bouts.

Bruce Schram, 32, of Manhattan Beach earned the title of grand champion at the World Contact Karate Championships on July 12 in New Orleans.

Schram, the two-time defending national champion and three-time defending state champion in contact karate, defeated defending grand champion Joe Walker of Illinois in the final to win his first world title.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Schram, who holds black belts in three different styles of karate, won the heavyweight competition at the world championships before winning two more matches to earn the title of grand champion.

Schram is the head instructor at the Koshiki Karate Do studio in Manhattan Beach.

Entry forms are available for bicyclists to compete in the community race division of the 31st annual Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix on Aug. 2.

From approximately 10:30 to 11 a.m., the Grand Prix will feature one-lap stock bicycle races for boys and girls (ages 12-17), men (35 and over) and women (18 and over). Other events are scheduled in the afternoon.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event. Entry fees range from $2 for most events to $10.

All events will be held at the Criterium Course, which starts and finishes at Live Oak Park.

The 30th annual International Surf Festival, which will be held Thursday through Aug. 2 at South Bay beaches, will feature surf boating, a new water sport making its debut in the United States this year.

Four of the boats that will compete in the event will be practicing at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The U.S. coordinator is Lt. Sonny Vardeman of the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Service.

The winner of the U.S. Championships at Oceanside in August will compete against the best competitors from Australia and New Zealand, where surf boating has gained wide popularity, for the world title.

The 15th annual Peninsula Baseball Camp will be held Monday through Friday at Palos Verdes Intermediate School, formerly Palos Verdes High. The camp runs daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to boys and girls ages 6 through 14. Dodger first baseman Eric Karros is expected to make a guest appearance.

The 20th annual Peninsula Basketball Camp will be held Aug. 3-7 for boys and Aug. 10-14 for boys and girls at Palos Verdes Intermediate School. The camps run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are open to youngsters ages 6 through 15. An NBA player is expected to make a guest appearance.
