What Wally Said

Regarding the article on me, “Wally George’s (Almost) 10 Years on ‘Hot Seat’ ” (July 11), I am very upset that writer Jan Herman did not fully quote me regarding my relationship with my daughter, Rebecca De Mornay.

He omitted some very important statements I made to him during the interview that leaves the impression that I was not a good father to my daughter. Nothing could be further from the truth!

In the article, Herman writes: “He can’t help basking in the reflected glory of her celebrity status even while conceding that she grew up in England without knowing him and wants nothing to do with him now.”

Herman then quotes me as saying: “What really bothers me more than anything is that she has given interviews saying I never tried to contact her until she became a star. It’s not true.”

He fails to complete my very important statement that said: “When Rebecca came back from England at age 18, she was totally broke. She told me she wanted to become an actress . . . and I helped her all I could. She stayed with me for a while . . . then I rented her an apartment, bought her a car, put her into Lee Strasberg acting school, had professional photos taken of her, printed her resume, paid her bills, gave her spending money and offered her all the love and support that I could. I have a stack of letters from Rebecca thanking me for being such a wonderful and caring father, etc.”

I have always loved my daughter, and the reason she grew up in England during her teens is because her mother took her there and I rarely knew where they were. I begged her mother not to take her away from me.
