Bernard (B.D.) Russell; Real Estate Broker

Bernard (B.D.) Russell, who sold real estate in the San Fernando Valley for more than 40 years, has died at a Northridge hospital. He was 68.

Russell, a longtime Granada Hills resident, died Tuesday of cancer, said his wife, Pat Russell.

Born in Los Angeles, Russell graduated from Hollywood High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. In the early 1950s, Russell began selling real estate with his friend, Forest E. Olson, at Waddell Realty in Van Nuys. He later was associated with Forest E. Olson Realtors in Northridge, and managed the firm’s Granada Hills office.

In the mid-1980s, he and his wife formed a real estate firm, Russell & Associates, in the San Fernando Valley.

In addition to his wife of 15 years, Russell is survived by his son, Michael Russell of Las Vegas; daughters Linda Hood of Huntington Beach, Patricia Ann Russell of Canyon Country, Valerie Nelson of Gresham, Ore., and Colleen Lutz of Oregon; stepsons William Wanamaker and Scott Wanamaker of June Lake, Calif., and John Wanamaker of Granada Hills, and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 2 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday at Utter-McKinley Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Ave., in Mission Hills, which is handling the arrangements.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, 16545 Chatsworth St., in Granada Hills. Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Russell’s name to the American Cancer Society.
