IRVINE THUNDER: An Irvine advisory committee has come up with a package to encourage understanding among the city’s increasingly divergent cultures: a weekly fall film festival. The city will show foreign movies for free on a large-screen TV at City Hall. . . . “The point is to stimulate discussion of intercultural issues,” says city cultural official Toni McDonald. First up: “Distant Thunder,” by Satyajit Ray, on Sept. 30, about the 1943 famine in India.
