Ernie Irvan passed Dale Earnhardt on the final lap and won the Fram Filters 500K, the first Busch Grand National stock car race at Talladega.
Earnhardt, who started from the pole, was at or near the lead throughout the 117-lap race. He appeared to be in control until the first turn of the last lap on the 2.66-mile oval. That’s when Irvan drove low on the high-banked track and, followed by Michael Waltrip, raced past Earnhardt into the lead.
Waltrip finished second, followed by Todd Bodine, Earnhardt and Hut Stricklin.
