The Name’s Jimmy, an Illinois-bred colt, took the lead at the top of the stretch and won the 80th American Derby at Arlington on Saturday.

With jockey Pat Day urging him on over the soft turf course, the chestnut colt won the 1 3/16-mile race by two lengths.

French-raced but Kentucky-bred Standiford finished second under Gary Stevens. May I Inquire was third.

The Name’s Jimmy saved ground on the rail most of the way while Star Recruit and Restless Doctor set the pace.

“He’s a pretty nifty little colt,” Day said. “As we came around the stretch turn, there was just a very narrow opening to the outside of the leaders. I asked him to get in there, and he jumped right into it, and we went on from there.”

The Name’s Jimmy paid $11, $6.20 and $4.40 as a close second choice to World Class Splash. His time was 1:59 2/5.

Standiford returned $7.80 and $4.60. May I Inquire returned $4.20. World Class Splash finished fifth after a late rally.
