PLATFORM : A Job With Dignity

Share
ALBERT HERRERA, 38, of La Habra, is a dry-waller who works in both Orange and Los Angeles counties. Commenting on what he called "a need for dignity for his fellow workers," he told The Times:

Since the day I first started dry-walling more than 10 years ago, wages and working conditions have not improved very much. Since I was 14, I’ve always had a job. I’m not lazy and I pay my bills.

I thank God that I have work so I can feed and clothe my children. To work and feed your family is every father’s responsibility. It gives him dignity. It gives him a purpose. It give him respect for himself and others. Is it not right to ask for the same respect and fairness from those who employ us? Is it right that just because there are many who need jobs, that a few take advantage of so many?

My wife and I work hard to give our children the things they need. We hope that one day they will be able to go to college and not have to sweat and scrape to make a living like we do. But most of all, I want my children to have dignity in their lives. I want them to come home from work with their heads held high, knowing that they have a job with dignity.
