Wrong Site for Academy

In response to “Sylmar Site Is Favored for New Police Academy,” June 26: It would be nice to know how each of the six sites under consideration is being measured to determine its desirability, who favors Olive View and why.

The Olive View site is adjacent to recreational trails used by local hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The county property also abuts Wilson Canyon, long under consideration for purchase by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy as an open space and wildlife corridor.

I’m no environmentalist. I’m just tired of our local trails becoming more and more inaccessible due to increased traffic and the wildlife being pushed farther back into the mountains as development marches on.

I have nothing against the idea of a police academy in Sylmar. I just think Olive View is the wrong place. The academy won’t mean additional police cars assigned to Sylmar (we have 1 1/2), but it will bring more traffic and noise.
