NEWPORT BEACH : School Board Won’t Meet Until Aug. 31

Share

Trustees at the Newport-Mesa Unified School District have canceled the board’s regular meetings for the next five weeks and scheduled a special meeting at the end of August to discuss the district budget.

The board does not plan to meet again until Monday, Aug. 31, when it will review the district’s beleaguered finances. Trustees are likely to make further changes in the budget, which has been through a number of revisions in recent months as the cash-poor district tries to reduce expenses and cover a $3.6-million deficit.

The board decided to shut down for the rest of the summer because it can make no further decisions on the district budget until the state Legislature and governor approve California’s budget.

The Aug. 31 meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa. After that, the board will resume regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
