Banding together behind their bald teammate, Bob Samuelson, the entire U.S. Olympic volleyball squad, angry over the reversal of their five-game victory over Japan on Sunday, voted Monday to show up for the next match with shaved heads, The Times has learned.

Several players--among them, Nick Becker, Carlos Briceno, Bob Ctvrtlik, Bryan Ivie, Doug Partie and Eric Sato--already have been shorn, and Scott Fortune, Brent Hillard, Jeff Stork and Steve Timmons planned to follow suit before today’s match against Canada.

Samuelson, 25, was the key figure in the officials’ decision to award Sunday’s victory to Japan. His teammates decided to either shave their scalps completely or get military-like crew haircuts.

Samuelson, 26, has a condition, alopecia universalis, that causes hair to fall out prematurely.

“I guess from now on we’re playing volley-bald,” a team spokesman said.
