PASADENA : Man Shot After Allegedly Striking Officer With Tool
A man who allegedly struck a Pasadena police officer with a long-handled gardening tool was shot once in the abdomen Wednesday morning by another officer, authorities said.
Charles Shepard, 37, was in critical condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital, said sheriff’s detectives who were called in by police to investigate.
Shepard’s ex-wife called 911 about 1 a.m. to report that Shepard was outside threatening to kill her and her family, Deputy Noel Lanier said. Shepard subsequently hit the family dog with the tool, breaking one of its legs, Lanier said.
Police arrived and ordered Shepard to drop the combination hoe and two-pronged gardening fork, Lanier said. But he said Shepard charged the officers.
One officer was backed against a wall and Shepard struck him on the upper torso, prompting a second officer to shoot Shepard, Lanier said. The officer suffered minor injuries.
