From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Border Patrol agents seized 2,033 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of more than $4 million after chasing a pickup truck near the international border. Agents from the Campo station who were on a routine patrol saw a northbound pickup on a dirt road leading from the border. When agents tried to stop the truck, the driver failed to yield and turned south on the road that agents say is used by illegal aliens and smugglers. About two miles north of the border the truck pulled over and the driver and passenger ran away. Agents apprehended the driver, a 26-year-old man from Mexico whose name is being withheld pending further investigation. The passenger escaped into dense brush surrounding the area. The agents discovered the marijuana in plastic-wrapped packages in the back of the truck. It was the second marijuana seizure exceeding 2,000 pounds in the Border Patrol’s San Diego sector this week.
