ANTELOPE VALLEY : DUI Charge Possible in Caltrans Worker’s Death
A driver who struck and killed a Caltrans worker along the Antelope Valley Freeway was under the influence of prescription drugs, authorities said Thursday. They said they plan to seek charges against him of felony driving under the influence and manslaughter with gross negligence.
At least six witnesses said that Scott Ellis III, 42, of Palmdale was weaving across several lanes of freeway traffic and driving only 25 to 45 m.p.h. even in the passing lane, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Nemback.
Caltrans officials said Thursday that additional safety measures could not have prevented Buser’s death. They said they will continue to do most roadwork on California freeways without shutting them down. On Wednesday, a Caltrans official said road closures have been under consideration because five Caltrans workers have died in the last three months while on the job.
