Countywide : United Way Giving $50,000 to Red Cross

The United Way of Orange County announced Thursday a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, a national reserve severely sapped by what officials say has been the worst two years of disasters in the service organization’s 111-year history.

The donation is in addition to the Orange County United Way’s regular annual support of the area Red Cross, which last fiscal year totaled $1.2 million, a Red Cross spokesman said.

The announcement of the donation comes three months after a plea from the national Red Cross for money to bolster a fund depleted by two years of unprecedented disasters, both large and small.

The most significant Red Cross effort in Orange County occurred June 23, when the disaster service stepped in to help dozens of displaced tenants find food and shelter after a four-alarm fire swept through the crowded La Ramada Apartments in Anaheim.
