Share

A Long Beach municipal judge this week ordered two local men and a youth to stand trial in the killing of a motorcyclist during the riots.

After a two-day preliminary hearing, Judge Gary Ferrari on Thursday upheld murder charges against Larry Grant Williams, 24, Brent Lamar Jones, 17, and Darryl Leonardo Smith, 24.

The three are accused of waylaying Long Beach resident Matthew Haines on April 30 as he was on his way to help a friend. After falling from his motorcycle, Haines was robbed and shot to death. His nephew, Scott Coleman, who was riding with him, was shot three times but survived.

Ferrari dismissed murder charges against three youths. However, they still face several other riot-related charges. All six are to be arraigned in Long Beach Superior Court on Aug. 13.
