Bobby Hughes, a 1989 graduate of Notre Dame High and catcher last season for USC, said he will sign a contract today with the Milwaukee Brewers, who selected Hughes in the second round of baseball’s amateur draft in June.

Hughes, 21, who batted .351 with 13 home runs and 45 runs batted last season at USC, said he will receive an undisclosed signing bonus after nearly two months of negotiating with the club.

“We’re really close,” Hughes said by telephone from Milwaukee on Tuesday night. “They made a very generous offer, and when I sign the contract (today), everything will be ready to go.”

Hughes said he will report immediately to the club’s Class-A affiliate in Helena, Mont.

Scott Berger of Granada Hills High, a Times All-Valley outfielder last season, will attend UCLA and play for the Bruins as a walk-on next season.

Berger was a three-year starter for Granada Hills. He batted .446 as a senior and was an All-City Section selection.

Robin Heidt, a Canyon High distance runner who placed fourth in the 3,200 meters in the Southern Section 4-A Division track and field championships in May, will attend UC Davis.

Heidt chose UC Davis over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to follow Deanne Johnson, the women’s track and cross-country coach at San Luis Obispo, who accepted a position as an assistant at UC Davis this summer.

Heidt has a personal best of 11 minutes 2.38 seconds in the 3,200.

Andy Dominique of Alemany High, Jeff Tagliaferri of Kennedy and Francisco Dongo of Notre Dame will play for the Norwalk-based Southern California Cardinals in the Mickey Mantle (15-16 years old) World Series in Waterbury, Conn., Aug. 7-11.

The fifth Las Virgenes Dole soccer tournament will take place Friday through Sunday at Oak Park High, Brookside School and Medea Creek Park. Boys and girls aged 10 to 19 will participate.
