PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Washington Closer to Making Deal

Another day passed in the Raiders’ summer of discontent with still no sign of the missing seven at their training camp in Oxnard.

But according to cornerback Lionel Washington’s agent, D.S. Ping, there is some reason for optimism.

“We’re not that far apart on the money,” Ping said from his Michigan home. “And we’ve agreed on the length of the contract.”

Others missing from action because of contract disputes are running back Marcus Allen, receiver Tim Brown, cornerback Terry McDaniel, linebacker Winston Moss and defensive linemen Greg Townsend and Scott Davis.

“These things happen annually,” said Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations. “But it gets to the point where someone gets hurt. At this point, it’s a matter of how far apart they are. It’s up to them to say they are going to take the deal and are ready to come in.”

Elvis Patterson, defensive back and special teams captain, was again absent from camp.

He was suspended after a fight with defensive backfield coach Jack Stanton last Friday.

Guard Tom Roth returned to Los Angeles for examination to determine the cause of an accelerated heartbeat. . . . Offensive linemen Max Montoya, who was sidelined because of a bruised shoulder, and Joel Patten, who was suffering from groin and ankle injuries, practiced and are expected to play in Saturday’s first exhibition against the San Francisco 49ers. . . . Tackle Bruce Wilkerson, recovering from a shoulder injury, also is expected to be ready.
