COSTA MESA : OCC Gets Federal Anti-Bias Grant

Orange Coast College has received a $15,000 federal grant aimed at eliminating sex bias and stereotyping in vocational education programs.
The grant to the Re-Entry Center will be used to encourage men and women to participate in a variety of vocational programs that historically have been viewed as the domain of the opposite sex.
“Women traditionally have not been encouraged to enter such programs as welding, construction technology or electronics,” said Nicolette Jackson, director of the Costa Mesa campus’s re-entry center. “Men, on the other hand, haven’t been encouraged to enter many of the . . . health fields. This grant addresses that situation.”
Jackson said the grant will enable the center to work with various agencies in the county to recruit women and men to the campus. For more information, call the center at (714) 432-5162.
