A 34-year-old Santa Ana man was shot and wounded Thursday night after being caught in cross fire between two cars as he was riding his bicycle, police said.

Abel Negrete was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo after the 8:02 p.m. shooting, said Lt. Bob Chavez. He was listed in fair condition Friday.

Negrete was riding on the north side of West 1st Street near Newhope Street when he was shot once in the back by the occupants of a westbound car, who apparently were firing at another vehicle headed west, Chavez said.

Police said they do not think Negrete knew the occupants of the cars. “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Chavez said.

No one was in custody late Friday in connection with the shooting. Police have yet to establish a motive for the gunfire.
