From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 600 people seeking tips on temblor safety and up-to-date scientific information called the state Office of Emergency Service’s new earthquake safety hot line on its first day of operation this week, officials reported. The hot line, which is answered by a bank of technicians, was launched Wednesday to respond to an increased number of public inquiries after the June 28 Landers and Big Bear quakes. Staffers answer the toll-free number, (800) 286-SAFE, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The hot line is equipped with a device to assist deaf and hearing-impaired people.
