A man surrendered to police less than an hour after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend while she was working as a clerk in a video store, police said Saturday.

“He walked into the police station and said he killed his girlfriend at the store,” said Lt. Ed McErlain of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The shooting took place at Video 2010, at 19461 Brookhurst St., in a busy but generally quiet strip shopping center at the corner of Yorktown Avenue.

“Everybody around here is really shocked and confused,” said Scott Hauser, manager of Little Caesar’s Pizza, four doors down from the video store.

“Nothing like this has happened in this area. People don’t know how to react,” Hauser said.

McErlain described the victim as being in her late 20s. Her body was found behind the counter.

The assailant was also said to be in his late 20s. McErlain said he had keys to the video store at the time he was taken into custody at the police station.
