A 23-year-old San Juan Capistrano man was hit and killed by an Amtrak train late Saturday while he was sitting on the railroad tracks, an Orange County Sheriff’s Department official said.

The victim, Alberto Mendoza, was sitting on the tracks with two friends just 100 feet north of the San Juan Capistrano depot around 10:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, Lt. Dick Olson said.

The train engineer told deputies that the three men tried to get out of the way of the train, which was being pushed from the rear. Only Mendoza was hit.
