Mayor Is Unopposed for 11th Term : Elections: Only two challengers file for two City Council and three school board seats.

Mayor Talmage V. Burke will be unopposed in his bid for an 11th term on the City Council, and Councilman Boyd G. Condie will face a single opponent in the Nov. 3 election.

At the close of filing Friday, attorney Llewellyn Chin was the only challenger to enter the race for two council seats.

In a race for three at-large Board of Education seats, incumbents Stephen R. Perry, Phyllis J. Rutherford and J. Parker Williams will face a lone challenge by businessman Vincent Chow.

Condie, 53, is seeking a second term as 4th District representative. An accountant, the 28-year Alhambra resident said he has been active in downzoning residential areas, improving building standards and in long-range planning for Valley Boulevard.

Chin, 35, participates in community organizations, including the Friends of the Alhambra Library, the Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles County Bar Disaster Relief Committee. A dispute mediator and 13-year resident, Chin sees his role as a mediator between people of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. “I will initiate new ways to ensure that every Alhambran has equal access to City Hall,” he said.

Burke, 74, an attorney, is a lifelong Alhambra resident. He was first elected to the 3rd District seat in 1952.

In the school board race, challenger Chow, 42, is an executive with Edwards Theaters in Alhambra. He sits on the city Planning Commission and the West San Gabriel Valley Consortium. He has lived in the district for seven years.

Perry, 29, a police officer who is seeking a second term, said he has worked closely with the Drug Abuse Advisory Board, PTA and Industry Education Council.

Rutherford, 45, a 40-year Alhambra resident, is up for her third term. A behavior management educator, she advocates an open-door policy for community members. Her two children graduated from Alhambra schools.

Williams, 55, a lifelong resident of the Alhambra school district, is running for a second term. He is a former Alhambra mayor, three-term council member, and past chairman of the city Parks and Recreation Commission.
