Retail sales in the first quarter of this year were mixed, with some areas showing modest gains while others continued to decline, City Finance Director Brian Butler said this week.
Sales at the Glendale Galleria continued down, with a drop of 10% compared to the same period a year ago. Officials attributed the continued decline to the recession and vacancies in the mall.
Car sales among dealers on South Brand Boulevard were down 5% compared to the first quarter of 1991, but the decline was the smallest since sales peaked in 1989, Butler said.
Some other areas, including Montrose and the Glendale Fashion Center near the Civic Center, recorded modest increases in retail activity.
