Top-seeded Jim Courier had little trouble beating Richard Schmidt, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round of the $1.4-million ATP Championship at Mason, Ohio.

Courier, who won the Australian and French Opens this year but was an early loser at Wimbledon and the Olympics, said he was having no trouble adjusting to the hardcourt surface, similar to what will be used at the U.S. Open later this month.

In other matches, third-seeded Pete Sampras defeated Francisco Montana, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-3; eighth-seeded Ivan Lendl beat Gianluca Pozzi of Italy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1; David Wheaton defeated 16th-seeded Andrei Cherkasov of Russia, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2); fourth-seeded Michael Chang beat Sandon Stolle of Australia 6-4, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia defeated Derrick Rostagno, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
