HOLLYWOOD : City Council Approves Funds for Private Patrols
Private security guards and neighborhood watch groups will patrol Hollywood Boulevard under a $1-million redevelopment program approved Friday by the Los Angeles City Council.
Three-quarters of the money will be used to hire 14 security guards to patrol the crime-plagued boulevard, and $75,000 will go for cellular phones to assist neighborhood groups in their patrols. The Hollywood Boulevard Cooperative Security program also will spend $250,000 to provide social service programs for homeless people contacted by the security patrols.
City Councilman Michael Woo proposed the private security arrangement because state law prohibits the use of redevelopment funds to pay the salaries of police officers.
