A 50-year-old woman standing outside to cool off on a hot evening was shot and killed by suspected gang members in Lincoln Heights, east of downtown Los Angeles, police said Saturday.
Delia Govea and her daughter-in-law, Marcela, had stepped outdoors with other relatives just before midnight Friday to escape the heat of their home on Pomona Street, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Gary Macnamara said.
As a youth in a passing car shouted a gang slogan, two other youths in the car opened fire, striking Delia Govea in the back and hitting Marcela Govea in the hand, Macnamara said.
Both were taken to County-USC Medical Center, where the older woman died a short time later. Marcela Govea was listed in good condition Saturday.
Police are looking for suspects, Macnamara said. There was no apparent motive for the killing, he said.
