Hotels and hotel chains throughout the United States are offering senior travelers some attractive room discounts and, in many cases, money-saving deals in other travel-related areas, such as rental cars. A sampling:

* The Travelodge chain has created a “Classic Travel Club” that provides a 15% discount off published room rates to travelers over the age of 50. The discount is valid at any time in all 500 Travelodges nationwide, with no restrictions. In conjunction with Avis, Classic Travel Club members can also get discounts of 5%-10% off weekend and weekly car rental rates. Other members-only discounts are published throughout the year. Membership in the Classic Travel Club is free. Call (800) 545-6343.

* Travelers planning a trip to Hawaii before the end of 1992, and who are members of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), are eligible to receive a 50% discount at the Marriott Maui Resort on Maui’s Kaanapali Beach. The minimum rate of $179 is reduced to $89 per night, and also includes a 25% discount off food and nonalcoholic beverages and 10% off merchandise in Marriott gift shops. Room upgrades are available for nominal additional charges. To obtain the discount, a 21-day, non-refundable advance purchase is required. The $89 rate is available until Dec. 25.
