Rene Mendieta scored in the 29th minute as Panama upset 1990 World Cup qualifier Costa Rica, 1-0, at Panama City.
The teams play at San Jose next Sunday in the home-and-home, total goals series. The winner of the first-round match in the North and Central American and Caribbean region advances to a second-round group with Honduras, Mexico and either Surinam or St. Vincent.
