BELL : Closure of Card Club to Force City Layoffs

Share

Bell officials say they will have to lay off at least 10 employees because of revenue lost after the closure of the Regency Club card casino.

Additional layoffs will be necessary if the casino does not reopen by Sept. 2, they said. The layoffs will take place over the next 45 days.

The poker parlor shut its doors July 31 when the owner, who has left the country, neglected to renew its gaming license.

The casino was expected to generate $955,000 for the city’s $7.1-million general fund this fiscal year. In its heyday, the club added more than $2 million to Bell’s coffers.

The financially troubled casino remains closed while the state attorney general’s gaming registration division considers a new license application. That process could take months, state officials have said.
