Region : City College to Start Early

Fall classes at Los Angeles City College will begin Monday--three weeks earlier than last year--so that students can complete the semester by Christmas vacation, college officials said.

However, college officials believe that many new students might not be aware of the changes and are planning to wait until after Labor Day to enroll.

The number of first-time students who have signed up for classes is down one-third from the number of new students who were enrolled at the beginning of classes last year, college spokesman Fred Piegonski said. He is urging prospective students to come to the campus as soon as possible to enroll, although registration continues through Sept. 11.
