Norwalk : All Seniors, Some Disabled Exempted From Utility Tax
The City Council voted Tuesday to exempt all senior citizens and some disabled residents from paying the city’s new 8% utility users’ tax.
Starting this week, city officials will tour senior citizen housing complexes, mobile home parks and activity centers to help residents 65 years or older fill out exemption forms. Mayor Robert J. Arthur said the council gave the exemption to about 1,400 senior citizens because “they have worked all their lives and shouldn’t have to pay any new taxes.”
The tax, which is expected to begin appearing on October telephone, electric and gas bills, will bring in about $3.2 million in revenues during the next nine months, said Assistant City Manager Sanford Groves. Residents will pay an average of about $8 a month, he said.
Tax exemption applications and assistance are available at the Norwalk Senior Center, 13629 San Antonio Road; Alondra Social Services Center, 11929 Alondra Blvd.; Norwalk Housing Authority, 11689 The Plaza, at Rosecrans Avenue and Pioneer Boulevard, and the Finance Department at City Hall, 12700 Norwalk Blvd.
