PLATFORM : A Dream Dashed

Share
CAROL McBRIDE of Norwalk, a single working mother of two, has been living in the same apartment since her divorce 11 years ago. Commenting on her chance of getting a piece of the American Dream of owning her own home, she told The Times:

I don’t waste my time dreaming about buying my own home. I have other important matters to worry about, like feeding my kids, paying my bills or worrying about whether my job will be there tomorrow.

Growing up in the Midwest, it seemed owning a home was pretty much a given for most Americans--my parents, for one. And though my dad wasn’t exactly a Wall Street banker, he still was able to buy a home. Now it seems that the Wall Street bankers are the only ones who can afford homes.

When my kids were younger, they would always ask me when we would be getting our own home. I would always say, “Pretty soon. We just need to get a little ahead.” That was 10 years ago. We don’t even talk about it now.

Sometimes kids are better able to handle the realities of life. Maybe that’s why they’re still able to have their own dreams. I guess I’m too old for that. I know some dreams will never come true.
