A bus carrying 56 tourists from Barcelona to Expo ’92 in Seville toppled down a steep embankment Wednesday, killing 45 people and injuring 11, officials said.

Hospital officials said four of the survivors were in extremely serious condition and another six were gravely hurt with multiple fractures, head injuries and crushed limbs.

Authorities said they did not know the cause of the accident but said the bus failed to make a tight curve.

“It is a scene difficult to imagine and impossible to forget,” Francisco Granados, central government representative in Valencia province, told reporters. “It was a real death trap.”

Early news reports said the vehicle was crushed almost beyond recognition.

The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. on the A-7 highway, 62 miles north of the Mediterranean city of Valencia.

Granados said the driver, who survived virtually unscathed, took the bend at 65 m.p.h., well above the 24-m.p.h. speed limit, and lost control.
