A speeding contest between two motorists northbound on Interstate 5 near Balboa Avenue ended when one of the drivers shot at the tires of the other car, the California Highway Patrol said Friday.

No one was injured in the 12:35 p.m. incident, but bullet marks made by an automatic pistol were found in the right rear and front tires of the victim’s car, CHP spokesman Mark Gregg said. Authorities continued their search late Friday for the driver of a new, charcoal-gray Nissan 200 SX with no license plates, Gregg said.

The motorists, both described as men in their early 20s, did not know each other. Their race reached 75 m.p.h. and zig-zagged between lanes, Gregg said. The driver of the car that was shot at told authorities that the other driver drove with his left hand while shooting with his right.
