GARDEN GROVE : Adult Education Registration to Start

Registration for adult education classes in the Garden Grove Unified School District will begin Sept. 2 for the new semester beginning Sept. 14.

Students can earn high school diplomas, prepare for the General Equivalency Development examination, learn English-language skills and learn first aid. Additional courses include instructional aide training, sewing, photography and lip reading.

Classes are also available to help amnesty applicants satisfy requirements for legal residency under the Immigration Control and Reform Act.

Through the Regional Occupational Program, free job training is offered in fields such as appliance repair, word processing, child care and desktop publishing.

Special classes for senior citizens are also provided at community centers, including nutrition, cooking and fitness.

Enrollment times are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for day classes at the Lincoln Education Center, 11262 Garden Grove Blvd., and the Chapman-Hettinga Education Center, 11852 Knott Ave. Registration for evening classes is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the two sites.

Some class openings may be limited because of priority given to returning students and those on last semester’s waiting lists. Prospective students are advised to call before Sept. 2 to check on class availability. Regular adult education classes are open to people 18 years and older, and ROP participants must be at least 16 years old. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, with continuous registration during the school year. Early registration is encouraged to ensure course selection.

Adult education students are not required to reside within district boundaries for enrollment in these programs. Students registering for a high school diploma program or vocational training course for credit must meet with a counselor before attending class.

Enrollment is free for all high school diploma, English-as-a-second-language, citizenship, basic education, ROP and apprenticeship classes. In addition, fees are waived for students 17 years and younger and seniors over 60 years old. There is a $5 fee for other adult education courses. Foreign pupils classified as non-immigrant students will be charged from a new schedule of fees to attend classes.
