Panel Picks Lipski’s ‘Zephyr’ as McFadden Plaza Sculpture

Donald Lipski of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been chosen by the Newport Beach Art in Public Places Committee to design an outdoor sculpture for McFadden Plaza near the city pier.

Lipski’s design was recommended unanimously by the committee over submissions from Richard Turner of Orange and Christine Oatman of Encinitas in the $90,000 competition. The selection must be ratified by the City Council.

Titled “Zephyr,” Lipski’s work would consist of a large brass propeller atop the base of a railroad car, reflecting the history of the plaza site, where a railroad once operated.

“Everybody feels it’s a very powerful piece,” said Phyllis Drayton, committee chair.

Drayton said “Zephyr” would be the city’s first “purely art” commission, although, four years ago, the city commissioned Newt and Helen Harrison of San Diego to create a work for an art and landscaping project at the point of access to the Corona del Mar beach.

Drayton said the committee has not asked Lipski how long it would take him to complete and install the work.
