VAN NUYS : Unity Fair to Offer Social Services Help

Share

A community fair that will offer everything from amusement rides to AIDS testing will begin this evening and run through the weekend at the Delano Recreation Center in Van Nuys.

“The purpose of the fair is to bring the community together to access social services that are available to them,” said Sally Thompson, president of New Directions for Youth, a nonprofit social-service agency for San Fernando Valley youths.

About 20 booths will be set up Saturday and Sunday to provide information on employment opportunities, affordable housing, gang-prevention programs and graffiti removal. Free on-site AIDS testing and counseling and certificates for free immunizations will also be offered.

Money raised from concession stands and T-shirt sales will benefit youth programs at the Delano center.

The Van Nuys Unity Faire is sponsored by the Delano Street Community Impact Team, which includes representatives from City Councilman Marvin Braude’s office, the Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Presbyterian Hospital and other public and private groups.

The fair will be open Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m, Thompson said. The recreation center is located at 15100 Erwin St. in Van Nuys. Admission is free.
