A man rescued from a lake at Centennial Regional Park died Friday at a hospital, police said.

Authorities on Friday still did not know the name of the victim, who had no identification on him, police and coroner’s officials said. He died at 1:20 p.m. at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center.

The man was pulled from the bottom of a lake Thursday afternoon by an onlooker who had seen him struggle in the water. Witnesses said the man was swimming across the lake when he began floundering.

Josafat Aguirre, 26, saw the man go under water and dove in after him, police said. He was joined by another passerby, Kenneth R. Gouldsmith, who helped him drag the unconscious man ashore.

The pair administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the man was not breathing when paramedics and police arrived minutes later. Paramedics were able to start the man breathing before hospitalizing him.
