Back to Bakersfield

Jonathan Gold’s description of his trips to Bakersfield (“Achy-Breaky Bakersfield,” July 5) brought back four years of wonderful memories. We moved to Bakersfield from London, expecting to find dust, desolation and drunks on every corner. Instead, We found a clean city with friendly people, an excellent library system, a symphony and, as Gold has discovered, lots of good and inexpensive restaurants. On his next trip, he should try Lorene’s Coffee Shop, located downtown. Best breakfast between the Grand Canyon and the Great Wall!
I just wish I knew what this “achy-breaky” stuff is all about.
