RANCHO SANTA FE : Elderly Beating Victim Identified

Share

A 77-year-old man who was severely beaten in his Rancho Santa Fe home was identified Tuesday by the Sheriff’s Department as Charles DeWoody, a retired attorney from Philadelphia.

“At this point he hasn’t regained consciousness, so we’ve been unable to talk to him. We don’t have any leads,” Sgt. Bob Plumbley said.

DeWoody, who suffered major head injuries in the Monday morning beating, was in serious condition Tuesday, a spokeswoman at Scripps Memorial Hospital said. His condition was upgraded from critical.

The Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from the residence at about 9:40 a.m. Monday. There was no one speaking on the other end of the line, and when dispatchers called the number back there was no answer, Plumbley said.

Deputies found DeWoody lying in a corner of the back yard. Doors to the house were open.

DeWoody lives with his wife, who was out at the time, Plumbley said.
