Bush on Tax Cuts and Regulations

Share

After 3 1/2 years in office President Bush suddenly has a secret tax plan that will not be explained until after we cast our votes. Next year he says he will propose a tax cut of unspecified size and structure, financed by cuts in unspecified programs. And they call Bill Clinton slick.

Does the so-called “Education President” intend to cut student loans? Is the President’s real health care plan to cripple Medicare? Most important, we must ask does he intend to cut the safety net for the Americans left without jobs by the economic policies of his Administration? We don’t know, and he won’t say. What is the truth?

Perhaps he knows that if the secret was revealed the American people would tell him that it is, in the words of Sen. Al Gore, “time for him to go.” But I fear a more cynical truth. The real plan is “read my lips, I will say anything to be reelected.”

We cannot gamble with our future. In this high-stakes game the American people must tell the President that they call his bet. He must show his hole card or leave the table.
