Monrovia : Expanded Recycling Studied

Share

A plan for including condominium and apartment dwellers in the city’s curbside recycling program was introduced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The residential recycling program, begun in 1989, has been limited to single-family residences because of difficulties collecting in multifamily areas. Barry Foster, the city’s management analyst, said many residents who live in apartments or condos have called the city, asking to be included in the recycling efforts.

The proposed plan would use three systems. Complexes of two to six units would follow the three-crate plan in use in single-family areas. Complexes of seven or more units would recycle their newspaper, glass, plastic and aluminum in two 90-gallon containers. Large complexes with sufficient space would use two three-cubic-yard containers for recyclables.

The council voted to hold a public hearing on the program Sept. 22 in the City Council chambers.
