Former NHL center Mitch Lamoureux on Thursday reached agreement on a one-year contract with the Gulls, bringing the IHL team’s list of signed players for the coming season to 13, nine of whom have NHL experience.

Lamoureux, 30, played with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons and with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1987-88. In 73 career NHL games, Lamoureux, who spent the past three years playing in Europe, has 11 goals and nine assists.

Lamoureux is the third center to join the Gulls, who previously signed Keith Gretzky and Peter Hankinson.

“Mitch gives us another gritty, unselfish player who is capable of creating scoring opportunities for his linemates,” said Gull Coach Rick Dudley.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State extended its much-anticipated match with 10th-ranked USC to five games, but could not earn the victory, falling, 15-9, 14-16, 12-15, 15-13, 15-7.

After the Aztecs kept it close in the fourth game, speed scoring was used in the fifth game when USC dominated. It was the third match in less than 24 hours for San Diego State (2-1).

Gracie Schutt led SDSU (2-1) with 28 kills and teammate Jennifer Miller added 19.

“They (Schutt and Miller) really know what to do, said USC Coach Lisa Love. “It was a good win for us because San Diego State is so tough at home.”

Pam Hope passed for 61 assists, which was one fewer than Sue Peters had for USC (1-0).

“I’m real happy with the way the team performed,” SDSU Coach Myles Gable said. “Even with two freshmen in the lineup we played well enough to beat the No. 10 team in country a couple games. . . . Unfortunately they tell me you have to win three games to win a match.”

Although the Aztecs were looking for an upset as a way to gain a spot in the top 25, Gable said he was pleased with the outcome.

“I’m just real happy with the development of the team at this point,” he said. “Fundamentally we are doing very well and we’re going to build on this.”
