SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Bruce Springsteen will perform at San Diego Sports Arena on Oct. 6, the Los Angeles-based promoters Avalon Attractions announced Friday.

Springsteen and his band will perform a show that includes current material as well as songs from his long career. There will be no opening act for the 7:30 p.m. concert. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at all TicketMaster outlets.

Meanwhile, Wilson Phillips has canceled its appearance at the San Diego Street Scene. The vocal trio of Chynna Phillips (daughter of Papa John and Mama Michelle Phillips) and Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Beach Boy Brian) were scheduled to perform at the Q-106 stage Sept. 12, wearing wireless headset microphones and backed by a couple of musicians playing acoustic instruments. An undisclosed illness sidelined Phillips and forced the group off a mini-tour that would have included the local appearance. The dance-pop act, Technotronic, will replace Wilson Phillips at the Street Scene.

With Wilson Phillips’ second album, “Shadows and Light,” building on the mega-success of its self-titled 1990 debut, the trio represented the biggest-selling pure pop act ever scheduled to appear at the local street festival.

Street Scene producer Rob Hagey was disappointed by the cancellation but maintains that the fest’s two-day roster of talent--the most diverse in the event’s history--is strong enough to survive the defection.
